How to Search the Web

Click Here to check additional listings of search engines

First of all, we need to look at the various search engines available. A search engine is just another web page that provides a service of searching for information on the web. Here are some search sites:

Yahoo The most well known one. I like it for searching and for free e-mail.
Excite: I like this one for searching. And it has a family filter for blocking unwanted material. As does Lycos. They no longer provide free access.
Other general search engines include: Alta Vista, , Google, About, Lycos, Snap, Northern Light (Now specializing & charging), and others.
Go2 is a special search engine. Their description: Your FREE go2 Account provides access to search for nearby businesses, services and a wide variety of local information via your computer, web-enabled cell phone, PDA or pager. You have to register.
Check www.gnet.com for a nice list. You have to give them an e-mail address to get in. Try mickey@mouse.com
Dogpile is unusual in that it searches a number of other engines and tabulates the results.
Ask Jeeves and Ask Jeeves Kids are good for asking plain English questions. The thing I don't like is the difficulty in adding their search results to my favorites. Any favorite/bookmark taken from Jeeves takes you back to Jeeves, not to the site you want.

Advanced instructions on refining your search can be found at http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/ysearch

Here is a nice list of search engines and other search resources, click here where I found hotsheet nice list of places you commonly search for & nicely categorized.

2006- I just discovered that InfoSpace Search Network
consists of Dogpile | WebCrawler | MetaCrawler | InfoSpace | Switchboard
