Saving & Finding attachments received in e-mail

This
is a question I get asked frequently. How do I save the pictures someone
sent me in my e-mail?
|
|
Fig 1 If your attachment is a photo, it should be displayed in the body of the e-mail as shown above. You should also see the file name displayed in the box that says "Attach". If the attachment is other than a photo, the file name will be displayed, but nothing will show in the message. To save the attachment, double click the file name in the Attach box. You should see the dialog box in Fig 2. Make sure "save it to disk" is selected. Click OK & you should get the Save Attachment As dialog box. |

Complete the saving procedure by selecting the folder you want to save the attachment to. |
By default,
the Save In location field should default to |
A
third way to save attachments in Outlook Express is to open the message
and select File,
Save Attachments to get this dialog box:

With
any attachment, you should check it with your antivirus program before
opening it.
(You do have an up to date antivirus program do you not?)
You should also have Go
Back
installed before doing this. If you make a mistake,
get a virus or crash your computer, you can back step out of trouble.
Next
comes the problem of finding the attachment after it is saved.
You need to know how to use some Windows tools.
If you can't find it & you noted the name of the file, use Windows
98 Find or
Windows Me/XP Search to locate the file.
I
recommend using Windows Explorer to look
at files in your hard drive.
If you saved the file in My Pictures, open that folder and look for
the file name.
Double click the file to open it.
Now
for Yahoo e-mail. When you open a message in Yahoo any photo attachments
should display.
You can right click the photo and choose Save As.
Here is an example of a typical e-mail message with a photo attached:

Notice
that there is a box allowing you to scan with Norton. If a photo is
displayed, this is unnecessary
since a photo cannot include a virus. If it is any other kind of attachment,
be sure to perform this scan.
You can save an attachment and run the scan on the saved file also.
Just don't Open it until it is scanned.
Most
e-mail program work the same. MSN, AOL, Hotmail, etc. One
serious warning: In Outlook Express,
you can get a worm from just displaying a message even if you are
running a good antivirus program.
Be sure you have the preview pane turned off in the View menu.
