Organizing favorites in AOL and CompuServe (Is this still around?)
Note: AOL has been modified in it's appearance a lot since I created this page, but the principles still hold.

To add favorites in AOL, click the heart Icon in a window* (see note at bottom for CompuServe) and click add to favorites. Or click the favorites icon and choose Add top window to favorites. After you get a lot of them, it gets messy to find them. This is how you organize them. I recommend doing it off line. That way if you get dropped during the time you are working on it, you won't lose any work. (Never happens, right?)

So, first, start AOL, but do not click connect. Stay at the sign on screen. If you are in AOL, click the Sign Off menu item and click Sign Off to get back to the Sign On screen. Then click the Favorites Icon. See Fig 1:

Of course AOL is up to version 9, but the method still holds.

Then choose Favorite Places. See Fig 2:

Note that the window opens as a small window. Maximize it. See Fig 3:

Notice that mine has a list of folders. A sample list is on the Main Bookmarks Page

To create new folders, Select the level to add the folder to. Typically you start at the top level. In Fig 3, the top level is selected and the first folder below it is About AOL. Notice that the Entertainment folder has 2 folders nested below it called Games and Humor. They were created by selecting the Entertainment folder before adding a new folder. Both folders and favorites can be dragged to a new location.

To create a new folder, click New, then choose New Folder and type a name for the folder. Click OK. Note that in the process, the Favorite places window dropped back to a smaller window. You need to re-maximize it every time. One minor irritation of AOL. See Fig 4:

Remember, you can drag things around to organize them, but the window will change size every time. Give it a try. It will make using favorites much more useful.

*I do not have CompuServe installed, but the only difference is that the heart icon in a window is a different symbol.

The new AOL 8.0 finally added the ability to create a new folder as you save a Favorite. Organizing them after the fact is still the same.
